Writing systems rather than spoken languages: the alphabets, syllabaries and other notations this atlas records as artifacts in their own right, distinct from any one language that happens to use them. Grouped into six bands by writing system typology per Peter T. Daniels and William Bright's The World's Writing Systems, Alphabets, Abjads, Abugidas, Syllabaries, Logo-Syllabic Scripts and Logographic Scripts, the standard classification the field itself uses for how a script represents sound and meaning. A script's own classification is recorded on the entity as a closed enum value first, and its subcategory placement follows that value rather than being assigned by hand.
