Dialects and Varieties

Dialects and Varieties groups regional, social and register-based varieties of a language that remain mutually intelligible with, or are historically derived from, a parent language, including geographic dialects, sociolects, pidgins and creoles treated as varieties of a base language, and standardized or vernacular registers, such as Andalusian Spanish, African American Vernacular English, or Swiss German. Belongs here: a specific named dialect or variety, the parent language it belongs to, its region or speaker community, and its distinguishing linguistic features. Does not belong here: a full language in its own right with no named parent-variety relationship, filed under Languages; a genealogical grouping of related languages, filed under Language Families; and a named writing system, filed under Scripts.
