Every living, historical or reconstructed human language this atlas tracks as its own entity, organized below by genealogical family per Glottolog and Ethnologue: the two reference classifications comparative linguistics uses to group languages by descent from a shared ancestor. Belongs here: a named language or well attested historical stage of one (Mandarin Chinese, Old English, Sanskrit), including a scholarly reconstruction such as Proto-Indo-European. Does not belong here: the family or branch itself, which is a language-family entity, the writing system a language is recorded in, which is a script entity, or a scholar who studies a language, who is a linguist entity.
