Language Families

The genealogical groupings, Germanic, Slavic, Sino-Tibetan and the rest, that this atlas's own language subcategory tree is built from; a family entity here is the classification vocabulary itself rather than a member classified by it, which is why this type is not itself subcategorized (doing so would nest the same 32 names the language type's 22 subcategories already group by). Belongs here: a recognized family such as Indo-European, Niger-Congo or Austronesian, including a family whose genetic unity is contested or rejected by most historical linguists but still named and discussed under its own entity, such as Altaic. Does not belong here: an individual language, tracked under Languages and cross-referenced to its family by SubLabel.
