The scholars this atlas credits with documenting, describing or theorizing about language: the founders of comparative philology, structuralism and generative grammar, alongside sociolinguists, phonologists and language documentarians. Grouped into four bands by school or primary historical contribution, Historical and Comparative Linguistics, Structural and Theoretical Linguistics, Anthropological and Documentary Linguistics, and Philology and Decipherment, a scheme chosen over a strict subfield split after the live roster concentrated too heavily under one Linguistic Society of America division to support that split honestly. This band excludes the languages and scripts a linguist studied, each its own entity linked back by relationship.
