Dialects and Varieties

Regional and social varieties of a language rather than the language itself: the dialects, accents and named local forms this atlas records as distinct from, but descended from, a parent language entity. Grouped into five bands by that parent language, English, Spanish, German and French each carrying its own band, with a fifth Other band for parent languages, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese and Swedish among them, currently represented by a single live dialect entity apiece. A dialect or variety is placed by its own live Descends From relationship to its parent language, an axis already present in this atlas's graph rather than assigned by hand.
