Austronesian: Oceanic and Eastern Indonesia

This child group, under Austronesian (Oceanic) Languages, holds the eastern half of the New Guinea and Pacific subcategory's Austronesian membership: the Oceanic languages proper, spoken from the Admiralty Islands and the Bismarck Archipelago through the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the edge of Polynesia and Micronesia, whose own dedicated groups sit alongside this one, together with the South Halmahera-West New Guinea languages and the Central Malayo-Polynesian languages of the Moluccas, the branch's closest relatives to Oceanic and the geographic bridge between island Southeast Asia and the Pacific proper. It also holds the family's own Central-Eastern and Eastern Malayo-Polynesian nodes, the reconstructed ancestors of this eastern branch, filed here rather than with the western child because their own defining innovations are shared with Oceanic rather than with the Philippine and Bornean languages.
