Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam and, with around 86 million native speakers, by far the most widely spoken Austroasiatic language, belonging to that family Vietic subgroup. It is written using a Latin-based alphabet known as chu Quoc ngu, developed by missionaries and adopted as the standard script during the twentieth century in place of the earlier Chinese-derived chu Nom script.
