Aranama-Tamique

North American Language Families

Aranama-Tamique, also called Aranama or Tamique, was an unclassified language of the Aranama and Tamique peoples, who lived at the Franciscan mission Espiritu Santo de Zuniga in what is now Texas and became extinct in the late nineteenth century. The entire surviving linguistic record consists of two items that the researcher Albert Gatschet obtained in 1884 from a Tonkawa informant known as Old Simon: the word for water and a two-word phrase meaning give me water. Scholars have compared this fragment against neighboring languages such as Coahuilteco and Karankawa, but no definite relationship has been established, and the language's classification remains open purely for lack of material.
