North American Language Families

A language family whose living or historical member languages are documented as indigenous to North America north of the South American landmass, including Mexico and Central America's Mesoamerican language families: Algic, Na-Dene, Uto-Aztecan, the Mayan and Oto-Manguean families of Mesoamerica, and the many smaller families and isolates documented across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America. Belongs here: any language-family entity whose constituent languages are indigenous to this range. Does not belong here: a family whose documented range crosses the Isthmus of Panama into Colombia and Venezuela, such as Chibchan, which this atlas groups under South American Language Families because its core is south of the isthmus.
