Slovenian, also called Slovene, is a South Slavic language of the Balto-Slavic branch of the Indo-European family, spoken by about 2.5 million people, most of them ethnic Slovenes living in Slovenia. As Slovenia is a member of the European Union, Slovenian is one of the union's 24 official and working languages, and its grammar retains a dual grammatical number, an archaic feature shared with only a few other Indo-European languages.
