Marquesic languages

New Guinea and Pacific Language Families

Marquesic is a subgroup of the Eastern Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family, comprising Marquesan, spoken in the Marquesas Islands and on Puka-Puka in French Polynesia, Mangareva, spoken in the Gambier Islands, and Hawaiian, spoken in Hawaii. It sits within the Central Eastern Polynesian classification alongside the separate Tahitic subgroup, both descending from Proto-Polynesian.

Marquesic is usually classified within Eastern Polynesian, itself within Nuclear Polynesian; no Eastern Polynesian entity exists live in this atlas, so this edge links directly to Nuclear Polynesian languages, one rank higher than the ideal placement. A future mint of Eastern Polynesian languages should re-parent this edge.
