Jicaquean

North American Language Families

Jicaquean, also known as Tolan, is a small language family of Honduras comprising two attested languages, Tol, also called Eastern Jicaque, and Western Jicaque. Linguist Lyle Campbell's 1997 study reports the two languages were about as distant from each other as English and Swedish; only Tol survives today.

Proto-Language Status
Jicaquean comprises two attested languages, Tol, also called Eastern Jicaque, and Western Jicaque, which Campbell (1997) judged to be about as distant as English and Swedish. Before an influential 1953 paper by Greenberg and Swadesh, Tol was thought to be a language isolate, and its tentative inclusion in a wider Hokan family remains debated rather than settled. 1
