Northern South Sulawesi languages

New Guinea and Pacific Language Families

The Northern South Sulawesi languages are a subgroup of the South Sulawesi languages within the Malayo-Polynesian branch of Austronesian, spoken in an area stretching from the western peninsula of Sulawesi to the Gulf of Bone, Indonesia. The group divides into five branches, Mandar, Mamuju, Pitu Ulunna Salu, Massenrempulu and Toraja, of which the first, third and fifth were already recognized as distinct units by van der Veen in 1929; Mandar and Toraja are its most prominent member languages.
