Brazilian Portuguese is the set of dialects of Portuguese spoken throughout Brazil, the native language of nearly all of its roughly 203 million people apart from small communities of European or Japanese immigrant descent and some Indigenous Amazonian groups. It diverges from the Portuguese of Portugal and of Lusophone Africa most noticeably in phonology and prosody, and grammatically in its strong preference for placing object pronouns before the verb and its use of the gerund, as in estar fazendo, where European Portuguese favors the infinitive construction estar a fazer. Its vocabulary carries a substantial legacy from Tupi-Guarani and from the African languages, especially Yoruba and various Bantu languages, brought to Brazil through the transatlantic slave trade, layered more recently with English loanwords tied to technology and commerce.
