German Dialects and Varieties

Swabian is a dialect group of Upper German, part of the Alemannic branch of the High German dialect continuum, spoken mainly in central and southeastern Baden-Württemberg, including Stuttgart and the Swabian Jura, and in southwestern Bavaria. It had about 820,000 native speakers as of 2006, and communities of Caucasus Germans in Transcaucasia and Danube Swabians in Hungary, the former Yugoslavia and Romania also speak Swabian dialects. Standard German speakers reportedly understand only about 40 percent of spoken Swabian, reflecting its distinctive pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.
