Morris Halle (1923-2018) was a Latvian-American linguist widely regarded as the father of modern phonology. Working with Noam Chomsky at MIT, where the two helped establish the modern linguistics department, Halle co-authored foundational studies including On Accent and Juncture in English (1956) and the highly influential The Sound Pattern of English (1968), which together pioneered generative phonology. He also developed generative metrics theory with Samuel Jay Keyser, establishing principles for analyzing poetic structure, and later co-created the Distributed Morphology framework with Alec Marantz, examining how word structure and sound patterns interact; Halle served as President of the Linguistic Society of America in 1974.
