Beothuk, also called Beothukan, is an extinct language isolate once spoken by the Beothuk people of Newfoundland. The Beothuk people were extinct by 1829, and only a small number of word lists and fragmentary records were ever collected, so almost nothing of the language grammar or structure survives. It is treated as an isolate because no convincing link to any other language family has ever been demonstrated.
