Western Muskogean languages

North American Language Families

Western Muskogean is a branch of the Muskogean language family of the southeastern United States, comprising the two closely related languages Chickasaw and Choctaw. Speakers today are concentrated mainly in Oklahoma, where both nations were relocated in the nineteenth century, with a smaller Choctaw community remaining in Mississippi. Both languages are highly synthetic and agglutinative, in keeping with the broader Muskogean family, and both are considered endangered.
