Zapotecan is a branch of the Oto-Manguean language family descended from the Proto-Zapotecan language spoken by the Zapotec people during the era of Monte Alban's dominance. It is spoken in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, and divides into the Zapotec languages proper, with regional varieties such as Sierra, Valley and Isthmus Zapotec, and the Chatino languages, with Highland, Coastal and Eastern varieties. Glottochronological estimates place the split of Proto-Zapotecan at roughly twenty four centuries ago, earlier than the internal diversification of the Zapotec languages themselves.
