Mamean, also called Greater Mamean, is a branch of the Eastern Mayan languages spoken in the highlands of Guatemala and adjoining Mexico. It divides into a Mamean-proper group, consisting of Mam (roughly 478,000 speakers) and Tektiteko (about 5,000 speakers), and an Ixilan group, consisting of Ixil (about 135,000 speakers) and Awakatek (roughly 11,600 speakers). Mam is one of the more widely spoken Mayan languages, while its Mamean relatives have considerably smaller speaker populations.
