Khinalug language

Khinalug is a Northeast Caucasian language spoken by about three thousand people in the villages of Khinalug and Gulustan in the Quba district in the mountains of northern Azerbaijan. Linguists have debated whether it belongs within the Lezgic branch of the Northeast Caucasian family or instead forms an independent branch of its own. The language has been written at different times in Cyrillic and, since a Latin-based system devised in 2007 by linguists at Moscow State University, in Latin script, and UNESCO Atlas of the World Languages in Danger classifies Khinalug as severely endangered.
