Yuman-Cochimi is a family of roughly a dozen languages spoken across Baja California, northern Sonora, southern California and western Arizona, comprising the extinct Cochimi language, the Kiliwa language, and a Core Yuman group that itself splits into Delta-California Yuman (including Ipai, Kumeyaay, Tipai and Cocopah), River Yuman (including Quechan, Maricopa and Mojave) and Pai (including Yavapai, Havasupai-Hualapai and Paipai). Cochimi ceased to be spoken by the late 18th century, and most of the family's surviving languages are themselves threatened. A relationship linking Yuman-Cochimi within a broader Hokan grouping has been proposed but remains tentative and unconfirmed.
