Seri

North American Language Families

Seri is an indigenous language spoken by the Seri people in two coastal villages, Punta Chueca and El Desemboque, on the coast of the state of Sonora, Mexico, with between roughly 716 and 900 speakers as of recent counts, including 720 native speakers recorded in the 2020 census. It is generally considered a language isolate; attempts to place it within the theoretical Hokan language family have found no concrete supporting evidence. UNESCO classifies Seri as vulnerable, and while the language remains in vigorous daily use within its community, some children are now growing up monolingual in Spanish, a trend that concerns community members about the language's longer-term transmission.
