The Northern Philippine languages are a proposed group of Austronesian languages within the Philippine subgroup of Malayo-Polynesian, spoken in north-central Luzon and the small islands between Luzon and Taiwan. Once regarded as more a geographic convenience than a linguistic reality, a 2008 analysis of the Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database found support for the group's unity, with roughly 60 percent confidence that Batanic is closest to the Northern Luzon languages. The group comprises four branches: Batanic, with four languages including Itbayat, Ivatan and Yami; Northern Luzon, with 41 languages including Ilokano; Central Luzon, with five languages including Kapampangan and the Sambalic languages; and Northern Mindoro, with three languages, Alangan, Iraya and Tadyawan.
