Wilhelm Grimm was a German philologist who worked alongside his elder brother Jacob throughout his career, most enduringly on the Deutsches Worterbuch, a historical dictionary of German intended to trace every word to its earliest attested form and use. Wilhelm took primary responsibility for the fairy-tale collection the brothers published together, editing successive editions into the polished literary form in which they became widely known, while remaining a working partner in Jacob's grammatical and lexicographic scholarship rather than a separate linguistic figure in his own right.
