Marvin Herzog (1927-2013) was a Canadian-American Yiddish language professor at Columbia University who received his doctorate there under Uriel Weinreich. Beginning in 1967 he directed and edited the Yiddish Atlas Project at Columbia, which in collaboration with YIVO produced The Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry, a major reference work documenting Yiddish dialects across Eastern European Jewish communities. His scholarship centered on Yiddish dialectology, particularly the geographic distribution and historical development of the language, as shown in his 1965 study of Yiddish in northern Poland.
