John Joseph Gumperz was an American linguist and academic who spent most of his career as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. His research on the languages of India, on code-switching in Norway, and on conversational interaction benefited the study of sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, linguistic anthropology and urban anthropology.
