German-American anthropologist and linguist regarded as a founder of modern American anthropology. Boas established the four-field approach integrating physical anthropology, archaeology, cultural anthropology and linguistics, directed the first PhD program in American anthropology at Columbia University from 1899, and argued that variation in language and culture reflects historical circumstance rather than evolutionary rank.
