Emile Benveniste was an Ottoman-born, later naturalized French structural linguist and semiotician, among the twentieth century's foremost scholars of the Indo-European languages. He critically reformulated Saussurean linguistic theory, developed a theory of enunciation distinguishing the utterance from the act of uttering it, and produced a landmark comparative study of Indo-European institutions and their shared vocabulary. His early, highly technical work limited his influence to a small circle of specialists before it reshaped general linguistics more broadly.
