Eblaite

Semitic Languages

An extinct East Semitic language, also called Palaeosyrian, used during the third millennium BC in northern Syria and named after the ancient city of Ebla in modern western Syria. Variants of the language were also spoken in Mari and Nagar. It was discovered through the cuneiform tablets found at Ebla. According to Cyrus H. Gordon, scribes might sometimes have spoken it, but it was probably not spoken much and was rather a written lingua franca that combined East Semitic and West Semitic features.
