Nuer is a Nilotic language closely related to the speech of the Dinka and Atwot, spoken by the Nuer of South Sudan, who call themselves Naath, meaning human beings. The source describes the language as uniform, with no definable dialects, and as sounding airy, light, melodic and breathy, with few hard consonants. Its written form was developed by missionaries in the 1930s and 1940s and includes several letters not used in writing European languages. Most Nuer cannot read their language, although the oral language is well developed.
