Sorbian languages

Slavic Languages

The Sorbian languages are the Slavic speech of the Sorbs of Lusatia in Germany, made up of Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian, which together form the Sorbian subgroup of the West Slavonic group of the Indo-European family. Scholars debate whether the two are separate languages or two major dialects of one language, and each has lesser dialects, six identified for Upper Sorbian and three for Lower Sorbian. Sorbian is closely related to Serbian, there are two distinct written forms, and the Sorbian-speaking population was estimated in 1976 at between 60,000 and 70,000, nearly all of them bilingual in German.
