Tahitic languages

New Guinea and Pacific Language Families

The Tahitic languages are a subgroup of the Eastern Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family, comprising Tahitian, Austral, Rapa and Tuamotuan, all spoken in French Polynesia. They form part of the wider Central Eastern Polynesian classification descending from Proto-Polynesian, alongside the separate Marquesic subgroup.

Descends From

Tahitic is usually classified within Eastern Polynesian, itself within Nuclear Polynesian; no Eastern Polynesian entity exists live in this atlas, so this edge links directly to Nuclear Polynesian languages, one rank higher than the ideal placement. A future mint of Eastern Polynesian languages should re-parent this edge.
