Sino-Tibetan is the second-largest language family by number of native speakers, dominated overwhelmingly by Mandarin and the other Sinitic languages, alongside Tibeto-Burman languages such as Tibetan, Burmese and hundreds of smaller languages across the Himalayas and the highlands of Southeast Asia. Its internal structure is genuinely contested: whether Sinitic and Tibeto-Burman are coordinate branches of a single family or whether the family should be reorganized entirely (the Sino-Tibetan versus Trans-Himalayan naming dispute reflects this) remains an active question in historical linguistics, unresolved by the comparative reconstruction available so far.

Proto-Sino-Tibetan reconstruction remains contested. Whether Sinitic and Tibeto-Burman form a clean two-way split, or whether Sinitic is one branch among several coordinate Trans-Himalayan branches, is actively debated among specialists. 3
