The Sara languages comprise over a dozen Bongo-Bagirmi languages spoken mainly in Chad, with a few also spoken in the north of the Central African Republic; they are members of the Central Sudanic language family. Joseph Greenberg treated all varieties as dialects of a single Sara language in 1966, while Tucker and Bryan the same year considered Sara a dialect cluster of several distinct languages; most speakers consider their own speech form a distinct language, but there is currently insufficient information to determine which varieties are genuinely separate languages and which are dialects of others.
