Quechua I

South American Language Families

Quechua I, also known as Quechua Waywash or Quechua B, is one of the two primary branches of the Quechua language family. It comprises a great diversity of linguistic varieties distributed across the mountains of central Peru, in the departments of Ancash, Huanuco, Pasco, Junin, and Lima. Linguists Torero and Carranza consider Quechua I older than the other primary branch, Quechua II, and note that it differs by its use of long vowels and several distinct morphemes.

Proto-Language Status
No dedicated Proto-Quechua I reconstruction is named in this branch's own sources; comparative work (Torero, Carranza) treats Quechua I as older and more conservative than Quechua II, marked by retained long vowels and certain morphemes, but does not cite a separately labeled proto-language node for the branch itself. 1
