Kawesqaran languages

South American Language Families

The Kawesqaran languages, also called Alacalufan, are a small language family of southern Chile's Patagonian channel region, considered one of the world's primary language families with no established connection to other American language families. Only one member survives, the critically endangered Kawesqar, spoken by a handful of elderly residents of Wellington Island; the extinct Central and Southern Alakaluf varieties completed the family, and a poorly attested Guaicaro may have been a dialect of Central Alakaluf or of Kawesqar itself.
