Guachi language

South American Language Families

Guachi, also spelled Wachi, is an extinct language isolate once spoken by the Guachi people of the Mato Grosso do Sul region of Brazil. It is known only from a wordlist of one hundred forty five words collected by the French naturalist Francis de Castelnau in the Miranda area in early 1845, the sole surviving record of the language. Guachi is often classified as one of the Guaicuruan languages, but the documentation is too thin to demonstrate the connection conclusively, and some linguists, including Lyle Campbell, treat it instead as an isolate.
