Gallo-Romance is a branch of the Romance languages that, in its narrowest sense, comprises the langues d'oil and Franco-Provencal, while broader definitions extend it to also cover Occitan, the Gallo-Italic languages and the Rhaeto-Romance languages. Old Gallo-Romance was one of the two languages used in the Oaths of Strasbourg of 842 AD, among the earliest written records of a Romance vernacular. Under the broad definition the family spans France, San Marino, Monaco, the Channel Islands and parts of Italy, Belgium, Spain and Switzerland, along with communities in the Maghreb, Polynesia and Canada left by French colonization.
