The Esmeralda-Yaruroan languages are a proposed connection between two otherwise unclassified languages of Venezuela and Ecuador, first suggested in 1902 and judged persuasive by Kaufman in 1990 and promising by Campbell in 2012, though not yet definitively established. The proposal links the still-spoken Pume, also called Yaruro, of Venezuela, with around 6,000 speakers, to the extinct Esmeralda language of Ecuador; absent confirmation, both otherwise stand as language isolates.
