Dargin languages

Eurasian Language Families

The Dargin languages, also called Dargwa, are a dialect continuum of more than sixty closely related Northeast Caucasian speech varieties spoken by the Dargin people of southcentral Dagestan in the North Caucasus. Roughly 590,000 people speak a Dargin variety, and the group is conventionally divided into northern-central, southern, Chirag and Kaitag branches, encompassing varieties such as Kubachi alongside the Akusha dialect that underlies the literary standard. Within the classification of the Northeast Caucasian family, Dargin forms its own coordinate branch, distinct from the Nakh, Avar-Andic, Lezgic and Tsezic branches.
