Home›Eurasian Language Families›In Group›Language Isolates and Small FamiliesGroupLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesA language isolate is a language with no demonstrated relationship to any other living or extinct language family, and a growing list of small Eurasian families, Yeniseian, Chukotko-Kamchatkan, Yukaghir, the Andamanese families, the Ainu family and the Basque-related Vasconic languages among them, are similarly unaffiliated with any of the larger phyla covered by this subcategory's other groups. This group holds every Eurasian Language Families member whose sourced description identifies it as an isolate, as a small family with no accepted wider affiliation, or as a discredited or merely hypothetical proposal, such as Borean, Dene-Caucasian or Pontic, that would connect otherwise unrelated families. It is the subcategory's catch-all for genuine linguistic orphans, not a dumping ground for anything merely hard to classify.Language Isolates and Small FamiliesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)Language Isolates and Small FamiliesFilter Results39 entriesRegionAllAncient Mesopotamia, in the area that is now modern-day Iraq (1)Andaman Islands (1)Eurasia (1)Eurasia and North America (1)Eurasia, sometimes the Americas (1)Europe (1)Extreme northeastern Siberia (1)France, Spain (1)India, Sri Lanka (1)Italian Peninsula, Eastern Alps, Corsica, Lemnos (1)Northern Japan, southern Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands (1)Russian Far East (1)Russian Far East, in the basin of the Kolyma River (1)The Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean (1)The Yenisei River region of central Siberia (1)West-central India (1)Speaker Count BandAll0.000000 (4)3.000000 (1)23.000000 (1)80.000000 (1)150.000000 (1)198.000000 (1)296.000000 (1)516.000000 (1)2500.000000 (1)4970.000000 (1)7000.000000 (1)20000.000000 (1)130000.000000 (1)806000.000000 (1)Macro-areaAllLanguage Isolates and Small Families (39)BrowseCompareSelect all 39AinuLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesAndamaneseLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesAquitanian languageLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesBasqueLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesBoreanLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesBugunLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesBurushaskiLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesCamunicLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesChukotkan languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesChukotko-KamchatkanLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesDene-CaucasianLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesEast Asian languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesElamiteLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesEsperantidoLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesGreat AndamaneseLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesIndo-Portuguese creolesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesKamchatkan languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesKho-Bwa languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesKuril Ainu languageLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesKusundaLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesNihaliLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesNivkhLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesNorthern Andamanese languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesNostratic languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesOnganLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesPaleo-European languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesPontic languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesPumpokolic languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesPuroikLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesRhaetic languageLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesSakhalin Ainu languageLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesSentinelese languageLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesSumerianLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesTartessianLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesTyrsenianLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesUralo-Siberian languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesVasconic languagesLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesYeniseianLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesYukaghirLanguage Isolates and Small FamiliesComments (0)No comments yet.
