Gallo-Italic

Eurasian Language Families

The Gallo-Italic languages are a group of Romance languages that make up the majority of the Romance varieties of northern Italy, chiefly Piedmontese, Lombard, Emilian-Romagnol, Ligurian and Gallo-Piceno, with related varieties also found in parts of central and southern Italy and across the border in France, Switzerland, Monaco and San Marino. Lombard has the widest geographic spread within the group, covering Lombardy, Piedmont, Trentino and neighboring Swiss cantons. Most remaining speakers are diglossic with standard Italian, and the languages are increasingly endangered, especially among younger generations in major cities such as Milan, Turin, Genoa and Bologna.

Facts
Region
Spoken across northern Italy, chiefly Piedmontese, Lombard, Emilian, Ligurian and Romagnol, with related varieties in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France, in Ticino and southern Grisons in Switzerland, and in Monaco and San Marino. 1
Proto-Language Status
The deeper grouping of the Gallo-Italic languages within Romance is debated: some linguists class them with Gallo-Romance, others with Italo-Dalmatian, and no single proto-language node for the group is agreed on. 1
