European Portuguese, also called Lusitanian Portuguese or Portugal Portuguese, is the dialect of the Portuguese language spoken in Portugal, including Madeira and the Azores, as well as among Portuguese diaspora communities across the Americas, Australia, Europe and Africa. It has about 10 million native speakers as of 2012. As a pluricentric language, Portuguese has several interacting codified standard forms across different countries, and within Portugal itself the varieties of Coimbra and Lisbon carry particular prestige.
