The Kartu languages are a small, closely related group of Pama-Nyungan languages historically spoken in the Murchison and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia. The family's core members are usually given as Yinggarda, Malgana, Wajarri and Badimaya, with Nhanda's membership debated by different classifiers and Thaagurda also apparently belonging to the group. The name Kartu derives from the shared word for 'man' in the family's languages, following a common Australianist naming convention, and the group is generally treated as a branch within the wider Southwest Pama-Nyungan subgrouping. As with many Aboriginal language families of Western Australia, several Kartu languages are now extinct and the remainder are severely endangered.
