Tibetan, in the sense of the Standard or Lhasa Tibetan literary and spoken norm, is a Tibetic language of the Tibeto-Burman branch of Sino-Tibetan, based on the speech of Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region. It has roughly 1.2 million speakers and is written in the Tibetan script, an abugida of Brahmic descent whose tonal Lhasa and Khams forms have drifted furthest from the more conservative, non-tonal Classical and Amdo Tibetan.
