Mimi of Nachtigal

Mimi of Nachtigal is a poorly attested language of Chad, known only from a word list labelled Mimi that the explorer Gustav Nachtigal collected around 1870. Joseph Greenberg classified it in 1960 as a Maban language, grouping it as a distant relative of the separately attested Mimi of Decorse, but the classification rests on a single old word list rather than a documented modern population, and later scholarship has questioned it. Because the language is known from no other source, its relationship to neighboring language groups and its speaker history beyond Nachtigal's own fieldwork remain unrecoverable.
