About seven Tanzanian sign languages developed independently among deaf students in separate schools for the deaf in Tanzania, beginning in 1963, though several schools forbid their use. In 1984 the Tanzania Association for the Deaf proposed a standardized Tanzanian Sign Language using signs common across the schools that permitted research, but it has never been officially implemented, and little influence has passed between the separate school languages; a dictionary and various online resources have since been produced.
