Script type sorts writing systems by how their symbols encode language, such as an alphabet, a syllabary or a logography. Wikipedia notes that "alphabets use graphemes called letters that generally correspond to spoken phonemes," a different mechanism from a syllabary's syllable signs or a logography's whole-word symbols. In the Middle Bronze Age, an apparently alphabetic system known as the Proto-Sinaitic script appeared in Egyptian turquoise mines in the Sinai Peninsula c. 1840 BC, apparently left by Canaanite workers.
